Born in Durban, Penelope Jane Dunlop joined the all-girl group Pantha in 1979, becoming the lead singer for the rock band Hotline in 1980. When they disbanded in 1987 she set out on her own.

Also known as PJ Powers, she has enjoyed a highly successful musical career in South Africa with a huge  following of both Black and White fans.

She has recorded 15 albums and is well known for her UK chart hit World In Union with Ladysmith Black Mambazo in 1995.

Some of her biggest hits like Jabulani she wrote herself. She has shared the stage with music greats like Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading, Hugh Masekela and others. She sang at the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela and at the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

PJ Powers has received numerous awards and in 2004 she was voted 93rd in the Top 100 Great South Africans.
