It was while completing her Masters degree in Media Studies at Rhodes University and working as a university lecturer, that Cathy O’Dowd responded to an advert in a newspaper for a place on the South African Everest Expedition.
She became the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest from both its north and south sides. The stress she experienced from overwhelming challenges, what she discovered about herself and other members of the team are some of the things she shares with her corporate audiences all over the world.
She was one of 200 women who applied for the Everest place, and was the one finally selected. It was a tough introduction trip for Cathy, as British team-mate Bruce Herrod was killed on the descent.
In 2000 she became the fourth woman in the world to climb Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest mountain.
She has written two books about her Everest experiences and is married to Ian Woodall, the leader of her first Everest expedition.
Her amazing and highly entertaining and thought provoking motivational talks come from the lessons she learnt from her first Everest expedition.

Patricia Glyn is a familiar face and voice on radio and television, is also an adventurer, and has hosted many different shows like the controversial documentary series Point Blank. Born in Holland, Tony van Marken’s family moved to South Africa when he was still young and where he also completed a Computer Science degree at the University of Cape Town.
